| When to use | - when you want to fund tuition for students at entrepreneurial
schools for the poor - when you want to widen local or global access to eLearning and online certifications - when you want to fund work-study "microprojects" that help learners gain experience, references, and track records (useful for entry into freelance marketplaces) |
| When not to use | - when existing education solutions are satisfactory |
| ------------------------ | |
| 1. ATTRACTOR - what makes this interesting | There is now an affordable, scalable, and self-funding way to spread skills for students and jobseekers |
| 2. CHALLENGE(S) - tensions addressed | 1) Rapid changes in markets and technologies are making old skills
obsolete 2) Traditional education systems are expensive and do not well prepare jobseekers for today's jobs markets |
| 3. OPPORTUNITY - vision of achievable change | Hundreds of millions of people worldwide will be able to more
quickly gain useful skills, and stay current with changing market
needs |
| 4. STRATEGY - proposed steps to make the change | 1) Overview of strategy is.gd/... 2) Substrategies - (for students) - (for donors) is.gd/... - (for public schools) - (for alternative schools) - (for governments) |
| 5. TEST - what stakeholders think of steps | - How can we be sure that microscholarships are being used for
their intended purpose? - How can we confirm their effectiveness? - What systems exist to "crowdfund" microscholarships? - Will donors be willing to offer microscholarships on a self-funding basis? - Will communities be willing to convey land grants to endow local microscholarship funds, and adopt reforms to awaken their value? - Will recipients of microscholarships agree to "pay forward" (with a small part of their increased earnings) to help others? |
| 6. DECISION – next action | POSITIVE - I'm ready to apply for a microscholarship (links to be inserted by each) - I'm ready to start planning a microscholarship intiative - I'm ready to donate to an existing local or global microscholarship initiative - I'm ready to help fill gaps in this Uplift Pattern NEGATIVE - I am not interested in Microscholarships UNSURE - I need to know more about microscholarships |

Mark - Couple of other things: 1. Do you think documenting regional challenges/differences as part of the pattern may make sense? What works and what doesn't in different countries? Perhaps this is a separate wiki page linked from here 2. The MamaMikes link to Kenya Microschools is not very informative in my view as compared to the other examples we have in there- Do we have a better link?
Mark - For the "when not to use?" section do you think we should have a funding related description as opposed to a mention to "education solution"? I think if there are existing models of funding that scales well to a cross-section of students, thats when we would not use it.Thoughts?
